1. Keep it clean.
When it comes time to mop up a mess, keep the water and the mop heads clean. Even in the cleanest of water, a dirty mop head just smears the dirt around over a larger area.
2. Lift and tote.
Don’t drag heavy trash bags across the floor. Not only does this up the odds the bag can split and spill trash across your clean floors, it also drags any dirt and grit along with it that can scrape and scar the floor.
3. Mind the edges.
Even if you’re not in the cleaning business, you’ve probably seen it: soap and mop splatter splashed up on baseboards and sidewalls. Keep these areas – and the corners – clean for a completely finished look.
4. Don’t get swept up.
When sweeping, make sure rocks, exposed metal, or other jagged bits are not trapped between the broom and the floor. Scoop them up quickly to prevent them from scratching the surface.
5. Beat the build-up.
Kitchens and cafeterias are magnets for sticky grease. After mopping, rinse with fresh water more than once to avoid massive greasy build-ups that can dull floors and make them slippery.
