“When the finish breaks down it leaves the raw wood vulnerable to oxidation, contamination, and breakdown of the natural binders in wood that “glue” the fibers together,” adds Williams.
Those issues are magnified when the wood is left to the weather and the elements. Rain, heat, and cold all prevent finishes from curing properly which impact their ability to protect the wood, so timing is a major factor when applying protectants.
Lacquer and conversion varnishes are the way to go for fine finishes and repairs in addition to being compatible with existing finishes. And Williams points out that products with low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and new water-based urethanes provide “greener” options and can be used where appropriate.
And just as every wood grain is different, Williams says the same goes for service maintenance contractors.
